This is a step by step on how to check/adjust your valve lash on a 2003 Cummins. Most other year will fallow the same procedure but may have their own small differences. Check your service manual for more information.

Intakes need to be between 0.006 - 0.015, if the lash is not within those setting you need to adjust to 0.010.

Exhausts need to be between 0.015 and 0.025, if the lash is not within those settings you need to adjust to 0.020.

The tighter the gap the more your valve will open. Too much and performance will suffer and you will damage you valve on the piston =)
