F1 FORMULA 1 | Lewis Hamilton Pole Lap 2018 Melbourne - SIMON HOSFORD

This onboard F1 lap of Melbourne is a CGI recreation (because you're not allowed to use the actual footage) of a real lap during Qualifying in 2018...The rhythm of the music was precisely worked out to exactly match every gear change to the nearest millisecond, and the tempo is constant.

The harmony of the music was of course purpose built around the engine note of the car, which is imitated with the guitar melody part.... I sort of approached it like "One Note Samba" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, where the melody instead becomes the simple constant part, and is made to sound interesting by the changing relationship to the chords moving underneath. That way, I could keep the sound of the engine in the guitar parts on top pretty authentic to the car.

Obviously, it was a lot of trial and error to find a constant tempo and feel that perfectly matched every nuance of the lap (it ended up being 159.7034 beats per minute, and in 4/4 time)...but I'm a firm believer that everything in the Universe has a natural pulse or rhythm. Even something that seems as far away from music as the gear changes, corner apex's, and braking points; and all of these things governed by thousands of variables on the day...

So, how can 81.164 seconds of gear changes, braking zones, corner apex's and acceleration match perfectly to 65 bars of music at 159.7034 bpm??

...who knows. But what a wondrous world we live in, where we can contemplate how everything is in fact connected, and not separate, like we tend to believe :)

Special thank you to Ian Ritter, for the wonderful work recreating it graphically!
