PMP Tutorial | Critical Path Method, Forward Pass and Backward Pass Are Explained with PMP Question
BlindTutor.com presents:
📘 In this video, you are gonna see what the Critical Path Method (CPM) is, including Forward Pass and Backward Pass calculations, and we’ll solve a real PMP-style question about it together 🎯
The Critical Path Method (CPM) is a schedule analysis technique used to determine the longest path through a project network diagram 🔥The Critical Path represents the shortest possible time needed to complete the project.
🔹 What it does:
* identifies the project's critical activities 🎯
* determines project duration ⏳
* calculates float (slack) 📊
* highlights activities that cannot be delayed without delaying the project 🚨
🔹 Forward Pass
The Forward Pass is used to calculate:
✅ Early Start (ES)✅ Early Finish (EF)
It answers the question:
"When is the earliest this activity can start and finish?" ⏩
Formula:
EF = ES + Duration
Rule:Start from the beginning of the network and move forward ➡️
🔹 Backward Pass
The Backward Pass is used to calculate:
✅ Late Start (LS)✅ Late Finish (LF)
It answers the question:
"When is the latest this activity can start and finish without delaying the project?" ⏪
Formula:
LS = LF - Duration
Rule:Start from the end of the network and move backward ⬅️
🔹 Float (Slack)
Float is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the project ⏳
Formula:
Float = LS - ES = LF - EF
Activities on the Critical Path have:
✅ Float = 0
🔹 Simple Example 🏠
Activities:
A (Foundation) → 5 daysB (Framing) → 3 daysC (Roofing) → 2 days
Path:
A → B → C
Project Duration:
5 + 3 + 2 = 10 days
Since all activities are on the longest path and have zero float, they form the Critical Path 🔥
🎯 Forward Pass calculates the earliest dates, Backward Pass calculates the latest dates, and together they help identify the Critical Path and schedule flexibility within a project 🚀
