How Filmmakers Used Drones to Capture the Mexico City Earthquake Rescue | Op-Docs

Mexican documentary filmmakers are some of the best in the world today — an underappreciated fact that inspired us to put together “A Moment in Mexico,” a special series of six Op-Docs by Mexican directors.

This week, we bring you Santiago Arau Pontones and Diego Rabasa’s “Ruptured City,” a visually spellbinding film about the earthquake that struck central Mexico last year on September 19 — the very anniversary of the devastating 1985 Mexico City earthquake. Made from astonishing drone footage and audio of rescue teams at work, the film tells an emotional story using an extraordinarily wide visual frame that allows us to see the city and its people almost as a single entity, responding in a time of crisis.

As the directors write, “On the heels of last year’s quake, the natural response of the vast majority of people was to go out into the street to help. The support was so overwhelming that the worst-hit areas were brimming with help. This documentary captures the essence of what happened when this new wound struck our city, the day in which the earth reminded us anew of the fragility of our foundations.”
