Easter truce: Political theater or step towards peace? | Ukraine This Week

On this episode of Ukraine This Week we were joined by Peter Dickinson, Ukraine Alert Editor at the Atlantic Council. He described the Easter truce between Russia and Ukraine as fleeting, calling it an element of “political theater” and emphasizing that Putin is trying to “create the illusion that he’s still in control.”

Dickinson stressed that the pause is not meaningful progress, noting that the short truce has purely symbolic value and cannot be considered a step toward peace. He also highlighted shifting dynamics in the war, arguing that the Trump administration now has far less leverage over Ukraine, as Kyiv increasingly relies on its own military capabilities.

Ultimately, Dickinson remains skeptical about peace negotiations and warns Russia still aims to “subjugate Ukraine… and wipe out Ukrainian statehood.”
