Our first camping experience in Ontario, Canada
Our first camping experience in Ontario, Canada
This trip was our first camping experience in Canada and our first camping experience in general. We watched a lot of videos on YouTube about camping, the gear that we need, best practices, and tricks. We thought that we were well prepared for the trip.
Our Air BnB with camping ground was a few hours away from Toronto so we had a small car trip before we reach our destination. On our way, we noticed a huge red apple and I instantly recognized it because it was a very popular roadside attraction "The Big Apple" and I saw the photos all over Instagram. Of course, we couldn't miss it. The place was nice and to our surprise lots of things were open. There's the Big Apple itself called Mr. Applegead, a dine-in restaurant, a pie factory, a souvenir store, an amusement park, a mini-golf, and an outdoor picnic area.
After that, we continued our trip and our next stop was Port Hope where we had to pick up some ice and also had our lunch at local McDonalds.
When we arrived at our destination we were greeted by the owner, a lady on the quad bike! She showed us everything and wished us a great stay! Her doggy named Scout was also there, trying to see who are these new people.
I thought that setting up a tent won't be a problem, but since it was our first time, it took me 30-40 minutes to set it up, and even then I still managed to put the rain fly wrong. Well, no amount of watched videos can prepare you for real-life experience.
Another problem was the number of mosquitos there. It was crazy. They were eating us through our pants and bug spray didn't stop them either! Savages!
After the whole camp set up, we made our first BBQ and relaxed after a long day. We didn't take our air mattress and decided that our sleeping bags will be enough, boy we were wrong! The area under our tent was full of rocks, uneven and also it wasn't even. We didn't sleep properly during our first night but were ready to improve things moving on.
Our next few days were really nice, we had BBQ, went to the nearby lake to explore it, played with Scout, and enjoyed the outdoors!
But on our last night, right before we were ready to sleep something unexpected happened. Zara was going to the toilet, and because it was a cold night she wanted to go somewhere close and not all the way to the outside toilet. She heard some noise in the bushes and put her flashlight towards there. Opposite of her was a wolf staring directly at her and seemed surprised to see anyone there. Zara kept her cool and came back to the tent. She told me what happened, and we really were not ready for this. For the rest of the night, we heard howling and something walking nearby our tent. I spent the whole night holding my knife in my hand just to be ready if something were to happen. Thankfully, nothing happened and the next day we told the story to the lady owner and she said that both wolves and coyotes are a possibility.
After the stressful night, we packed everything up and left the camping area with lots of memories from our first gaming experience in Canada!
On the way back we stopped in the city of Belleville and had our lunch there at the park.
