Mallard Ducklings at Martin High School

This spring, a female mallard duck laid eggs in the Martin High School courtyard. There is no freshwater or exits in the courtyard, and the school is in a highly urban area making it impossible to escort the family out of the school. Amy Dragon and her helpers took special care to provide the basic needs for the ducklings, and to not disturb their innate fear of humans. Mallards are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and it is “unlawful to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, possess, sell, purchase, barter, import, export, or transport any migratory bird, or any part, nest, or egg or any such bird, unless authorized under a permit issued by the Secretary of the Interior."
