The tower was never supposed to be beautiful.

It was built in the early years of the Ashgate Expansion — a
communications relay and atmospheric processing station at the
edge of REDNOX's outer burn zone. The engineers who designed it
believed in permanence. Reinforced volcanic concrete. Cantilevered
platforms rated for 400-year weather cycles. Redundant ember
heating arrays that would keep the internals warm even if the
outer world reached absolute red.

They were right about the structure.

They were wrong about everything else.

The Ashgate Tower still stands. The ember arrays beneath Platform
Three still glow — orange and patient, burning on a fuel cycle
that won't exhaust for another sixty years. The atmospheric
processors on the upper deck still pull volcanic particulate from
the red fog and filter it into something almost breathable.
Somewhere inside, a log terminal is still recording. Nobody is
reading it.

The last entry is dated eleven years ago.
It says: *signal received. origin unknown. holding position.*

Nobody came.
