2017 Historic Leyburn Sprints Highlights

Special thanks to young Cooper Freeman for providing the excellent drone shots for use in the video.

A Commemoration of Queensland's first-ever Australian Grand Prix - The Historic Leyburn Sprints is one of the most significant motoring events in Queensland and one of the State's biggest regional events staged, when over 15,000 descend to the small rural community of Leyburn. The Sprints concept caters to competition in a number of historic classes and an array of open wheelers.

2017 marked the 22nd anniversary of the Historic Leyburn Sprints concept and the 64th anniversary celebrations of the Australian Grand prix in 1949, the event has maintained around 15 000 visitors annually over the two-day format. Those sorts of figures provide a massive injection into the local economy that is a welcome financial boost for the town of Leyburn, the Southern Downs Regional Council and the entire South-West Queensland region.

In 2017, Defending champion Dean Amos slashed almost two seconds off his own lap record to claim a fourth straight outright title.

The Lismore-based racer set a time of 40.5651 sec. in a Gould GR55B single-seater on the sixth of seven runs against the clock around the one-kilometre street course.

Winning the Col Furness Memorial Trophy, Amos became the second most successful Sprints competitor after Toowoomba’s Ray Vandersee, who has won six times.
