In this video we shall be taking you around the beautiful continent of Africa and we shall be presenting to you the top 10 longest bridges on the continent. A bridge is a structure built to span a physical obstacle, such as a body of water, valley, or road, without closing the way underneath. It is constructed for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle, usually something that can be detrimental to cross otherwise. There are many different designs that each serve a particular purpose and apply to different situations. These bridges help to ease exchanges between cities and countries within Africa. Though the longest in the world might not be found in Africa, There are however many long and beautiful bridges in Africa worthy of their own place in the hall of fame.

10) Katima Mulilo Bridge(Zambia) – Length – 900m
The Katima Mulilo Bridge (also known as Bridge 508 in the Namibian Bridge Register) carries the TransCaprivi Highway over the Zambezi River between Katima Mulilo, Namibia and Sesheke, Zambia. Plans for the bridge, the only one over the Zambezi for hundreds of kilometers, were first considered in Namibia in 1982, and the number 508 was allocated to the project. However, the occupying South African government was opposed to the project and considered it an act of high treason to build a bridge to independent, racially not segregated, Zambia.The bridge which is 900m was inaugurated in may 2004. Before its completion in 2004, the contract was awarded to Concor of South Africa and Hochtief of Germany. The bridge was constructed using the German technique which was hydraulically pushed segment by segment across the river.
9) Mkapa Bridge(Tanzania) – Length – 970m
Mkapa Bridge is the longest bridge in Tanzania across the Rufiji River. It was constructed by Impresa Ingenieure, Fortunato Federici of Italy under the designation of H.P.Gauff Ingenieure Gmbh & Co of Germany. Worth over US§30million through a loan from Kuwait Fund, OPEC and the government of Saudi Arabia the bridge is 970meter long.This bridge crosses the Rufiji river and carries the road traffic between Dar es Salaam and the southern regions of Lindi and Mtwara At its inauguration in August 2nd 2003, it was amongst the longest road bridges in East and Southern Africa. It is named after the third president of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa..
8) Wouri Bridge (Cameroon) – length – 1.8km
The Wouri Bridge was constructed in the 1950s during the French war in Cameroon. It’s 1.8km long hitch was raised as a link between Douala and Bonaberi. it carries auto , truck and train traffic and also a central tool for international exchanges with countries like chad and central African Republic. Between 2004 and 2018 the bridge had undergone a major rehabilitation with an initial capacity of 2000 vehicles to 45000 vehicles creating monstrous traffic at the entrance of Douala’s heart. Due to this situation a second bridge was needful which was constructed by a multinational company called SOGEA SATOM and financed by both the Cameroonian government and French government bringing its total cost to almost 141.6 billion CFA. At 1.8km, it is currently the 8th longest bridge in Africa
7) Qasr El-Nil Bridge(Egypt) – Length – 1.9km
The Qasr El Nil Bridge (originally named Khedive Ismail Bridge), also commonly spelled Kasr El Nil Bridge, is a historic structure dating from 1931 which replaced the first bridge to span the Nile River in central Cairo, Egypt. It connects Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo to the modern Cairo Opera complex toward the southern end of Gezira Island. Designed by Ralph Freeman, Construction of the bridge started on February 4, 1931 and was finally open in June 6th. The Qasr El Nil Bridge, with sidewalks, is popular for strolling in the evenings. The bridge offers views of the river, as well as landmark buildings, hotels, and other structures on the island and along the Nile corniche on the west bank. The bridge is popular as a location for young Egyptian friends and couples to have an inexpensive outdoor date.

6) Armando Emilio Guebuza Bridge (Mozambique)- Length -2.3km
The 2.3km bridge was built in Mozambique across the Zambezi River. This bridge links Zambezia and Sofala provinces. It is named after Armando Guebuza a former president of Mozambique.It was constructed by Mota-Engil; Soares da Costa. Its construction started in December 2005 and was inaugurated on the 1st August 2009 making it the 6th longest bridge in Africa. At 2.3km it is the 6th Longest bridge in Africa.
5) Dona Ana Bridge (Mozambique) –Length - 1.7km
