How to Make Jewelry

DIY ear cuff, middy ring, and stoned rings. Get 2 months of Skillshare free: https://skl.sh/shmoxd6

I tried to get most of the material I used from home.. but some of the things I needed to buy was those helping hand things, some silver, flux, blow torch, and some silver solder. (other things I used that I just had at home was a hammer, pliers, tape, a file, sandpaper, scissors, tweezers, and a rock/turquoise)

We're going to make the ear cuffs first. Cut out a piece of silver that is like .25'' x 1" . You can buy silver that is already about that size so you won't have to cut anything... but I'm just going to use my scraps:)

I rounded out the corner by cutting it off then file and sanding it down. You want to get rid of all the rough edges.

Next take some pliers. These ones have teeth on them, so I wrapped them with some tape. That way it won't scratch up the silver too bad as I'm bending it.

Get the silver as round as possible ( and the size you want). To get it more round.. take something that is round that it will fit on. Put it on that round thing and hit it with a hammer with it pressed against a hard surface.. until its nice and round.

Next I'm going to make a little middy ring:)

First we need a little wire. So I cut that out, straightened it out with pliers and by hitting it with a hammer on a hard surface.

When you work with metal; bending it and hitting it with a hammer.. it will work hardened. That means is will get all stiff and brittle. To fix that you are going to anneal the metal with a blow torch. Anneal basically means to get it red hot.

I just a used a little kitchen blow torch to make all the rings:) and I also overcooked some Creme Brulee..

When annealing the metal be sure to keep the flame moving.. Thats a good tip for when using the blow torch always... or you will melt your silver.

The silver should now be easy to bend with your hands so you can make it nice and round. Fit it on your finger to size it up... then cut off the excess.

To solder the ring together you can't have a gap. So bend the two sides past each other and pull it back. It should have enough spring in the metal that it will stick together now:)

Next you will use some flux. That will help the solder stick to the silver and flow better. Put some flux on the part you want to solder together then torch it till it melts. Then add your Solder. (There are three different basic silver solders: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Hard melts at the hottest temperature so it is hardest to melt.. then medium.. then easy- being the easiest to melt)

I was using the wrong Flux so it wasn't working... I Finally got the right flux and it worked! So after you've melted the solder, dip the whole thing in water to cool it down. Then pull on the solder joint to see if it worked.

If the solder holds, you can file off any of the bumps and try to get rid of the seam so you can't tell where it was soldered together. Then sand of any of the fire stain you get from torching the metal.

Next I want to make a ring that has a stone in it. I was either going to use a piece of turquoise or this rock that Roms and I found while in Moab:)

When making this ring I had 2 basic parts.. the band and the part that hold the stone.

First I made the prongs that hold the stone by soldering two wires together in a lil' X. Be sure and use Hard solder to make that part. When making the band you will also want to use hard solder- That way when you solder the prongs to the band... you can use easy solder and that will melt before the hard solder (which is holding your band and prongs together) does.

Using those basic tips you can make almost any ring:) including the ring I made for myself at the end.
