***The Tinkathia System or Teen Kathia System (Hindi: three Kathas), was an economic policy enforced by the East India Company in India. It was practiced largely in Eastern India and in states such as Bihar. The Tinkathia System was challenged by the Champaran Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi, this in turn became a watershed moment in the Indian independence movement and it was based on that peasants had to grow indigo on the 3 parts of the land out of 20 parts.

***In other words, a farmer had to grow Indigo in 3 Katha out of 20 Katha (1 Bigha= 20 Katha). In Patna and nearby areas, 1 Katha is equals to 1,361.25 square feet or 151.25 square yard.

तीनकठिया खेती अंग्रेज मालिकों द्वारा बिहार के चंपारण जिले के रैयतों (किसानों) पर नील की खेती के लिए जबरन लागू तीन तरीकों मे एक था। खेती का अन्य दो तरीका 'कुरतौली' और 'कुश्की' कहलाता था। तीनकठिया खेती में प्रति बीघा (२० कट्ठा) जोत में से तीन कट्ठा जोत पर नील की खेती करना अनिवार्य बनाया गया था। १८६० के आसपास नीलहे फैक्ट्री मालिक द्वारा नील की खेती के लिए ५ कट्ठा खेत तय किया गया था जो १८६७ तक तीन कट्ठा या तीनकठिया तरीके में बदल गया। इस प्रकार फसल के पूर्व में दिए गए रकम के बदले फैक्ट्री मालिक रैयतों के जमीन के अनुपात में खेती कराने को बाध्य करते थे। अप्रैल १९१७ में राजकुमार शुक्ल के आमंत्रण पर महात्मा गाँधी के आगमन और अंग्रेज अधिकारियों के साथ लगातार बातचीत और चपांरण विद्द्रोह के कारण यह तरीका खत्म हुआ। भारतीय स्वतंत्रता इतिहास में गाँधीजी के सत्याग्रह का यह पहला प्रयोग था। इस कार्य मे डॉ राजेन्द्रप्रसादजी का भी काफी योगदान था। गाँधी जी के साथ इस आंदोलन मे जे.बी.कृपलानी, बृजकिशोर प्रसाद और अनुग्रह प्रसाद सिन्हा का सहयोग रहा!
