TH400 someone rebuilt with a bad forward clutch drum.

So this gentleman just bought an amazing restored 1977 suburban with a 454 and TH400. While going through receipts found one for the 'rebuild'. Needless to say I was concerned at the low cost. First day he takes it out of town and the transmission fails close to our shop. Removed the trans and disassembled it. A ton of metal in this unit and no signs of the usual culprits. After parts were cleaned and a closer inspection, it became very apparent the thrust washers between the forward clutch hub and drum had previously failed resulting in it grinding down the surface where the thrust washers ride and isolate the drums from spinning on each other. Even with washers in place, as can be seen in this video, the drums STILL touch. A good drum and new washers and no more hard part contact. Would've been better had the previous shop rebuilt it correctly. Oh well. In this vid you'll see something so simple can make a HUGE issue. Thanks for watching!
