Halophiles, thermoacidophiles, and methanogens are all types of archaebacteria, which are known for living in extreme environments:
Halophiles
These archaebacteria live in areas with high salt concentrations. The name comes from the Greek word for "salt-loving".
Thermoacidophiles
These archaebacteria live in environments with high temperatures and low pH, such as hot sulfur springs.
Methanogens
These archaebacteria produce methane gas as a metabolic byproduct in anaerobic conditions, such as in swamps.
Archaebacteria emerged at least 3.5 billion years ago and can also be found in common environments, like soil. They have a few distinct characteristics, including:
Most archaea have a cell wall made of surface-layer proteins that form an S-layer. This layer protects the cell from chemicals and physical contact.
Unlike bacteria, archaea lack peptidoglycan in their cell walls.
