The Greatest "Trojan Horse" in Tech History
The Greatest "Trojan Horse" in Tech History 🐴
In 2016, Netflix had a massive problem. Customers were furious about buffering. They blamed Netflix.
But Netflix knew the truth: Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were throttling them.
The ISPs were playing a dirty game. When you ran a speed test (like Ookla), they prioritized that traffic to show you a "fast" number. Then, they went right back to slowing down your movies.
Netflix didn’t sue. They didn’t complain. They built a trap.
They bought the domain Fast.com. It was simple. No ads. Just a speed number.
But here is the genius part: Netflix hosted Fast.com on the exact same servers they use to stream movies.
This put ISPs in a "Checkmate" position:
If they throttled Netflix, Fast.com would show a humiliatingly low speed.
If they unblocked Fast.com to look good, they accidentally unblocked all of Netflix.
Result? The buffering stopped.
The Lesson: Don't just tell customers you aren't the problem. Give them the tools to prove it themselves.
