The Battle of Verdun (1916) was the longest battle of World War One, lasting 300 days, with intense artillery bombardments. Over 40 millions shells were used, including one million shells in the first day alone.
After the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), an array of fortifications was built on the hills surrounding Verdun itself, including the iconic Fort Douaumont, considered to be the strongest fort in the world.
Whilst the Germans had intended to strike a mortal blow to the French army, there were incredibly heavy losses on both sides. The city of Verdun remained in French hands as attentions turned to the Battle of the Somme.
