Ultra running and trail running is a great way to get out into the wild and see areas that the average person never will. Part of the challenge of running in wild places is the necessity of preparing for bad weather. When I run 100 mile races or know I will be running somewhere with a chance of rain, I will usually bring a rain jacket or shell. In this video I will show you how the Patagonia Houdini fares against a torrential downpour. The Houdini is not a rain jacket and is only advertised as a water resistant shell so I know that it will not keep me totally dry. After 6 minutes in the rain I found that the shell soaked through in areas where it was pressed against my body but areas that were loose stayed dry. Knowing the limitations of your gear is important so you can make the best choices that will keep you warm and dry. Not only can this help to keep you comfortable during an ultra marathon but could even save your life.
