Dreadlock root maintenance on yourself (rolling + crochet hook)
Hi and welcome to the LizBlizz channel ^^
Are you struggling with a lot of new baby hairs going around or have very loose roots that don't want to really "dread" themselves into the rest of the lock? No worries!
The answer I have for this is root rolling (as taught to me by Righteous Dreads) and crocheting (as taught to me by Shaman Dreads)
Combining these two things is the bomb guys!
The process:
1. Make sure your dreads are clearly separated and gather all the loose hair you want around the dread you will start with.
2. Grab the dread between your index and middle finger (or thumb and index finger if your dreads are really big) about 2-3 inches from the scalp. Start rolling it towards the scalp using a good amount of pressure. Keep going at least 30 seconds and if the loose hairs get tangled into a "fluff ball" around the root you are doing it right. You may have to try a few times before you find the right distance, pace and pressure that works best for you! Experiment!
OBS! If you complete the steps for rolling consistently every week you may not need to actually use the crochet. Just doing this rolling should be enough of self maintenance, especially if you have fluffy dreads and you want to keep them fluffy.
However if there's lots of loose hair you will need to pull it inside the dread using the crochet.
3. Take a crochet hook (I like using size 0.6 or 0.7mm) and start pulling the fluffy hairs into the center of the dread with one hand, while the other one holds the dread firmly in place. Just pierce the dread with your hook, angle the hook a bit downwards and catch the loose hairs inside the dread, without pulling the hair all the way out on the other side.
4. Keep twisting and turning the dread making sure you gather the hair from all angles and sides and finish with a quick roll around it between your palms
5. Repeat!
