Musculoskeletal injury and degeneration is a common cause of pain and disability in Singapore's fast-moving urban lifestyle. It comes in a variety of forms, and can affect all age groups.
Traditional treatments for muscle pain and joint pain include anti-inflammatory medications and injections, rehabilitative exercises, and home remedies. In the past, surgery is often the next step should these time-honoured treatments fail.
As medical technology advances, additional non-surgical treatment options have become available for chronic injuries and intractable pain. These treatments are based on sound medical concepts as well as years of medical research and testing. Magnetotherapy is one of these advanced modalities.
But because the concepts behind new technologies are often difficult to grasp for the layman, there may be a misconception that these are "alternative treatments" or "alternative medicine". Even more unfortunately for magnetotherapy, due to its name it is often confused with the use of magnets in slippers and bracelets and such.
What is magnetotherapy?
Magnetotherapy is an umbrella term for various advancements in the principle that high-frequency electromagnetic currents could have therapeutic effects. Research in this mode of healing began in the early 1900's, and have made steady progress through the century. The most modern forms are Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, Combined Electromagnetic Field Therapy, and Focused Electromagnetic Field Therapy. They are approved as patented medical devices around the world.
Magnetotherapy utilises specifically calibrated electromagnetic fields to induce biochemical changes at the cellular level, stimulating multiple natural healing mechanisms. Not any off-the-shelf static magnetic device would do; magnetotherapy regulates ionic migration across cell membranes according to the findings of medical science.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, or PEMF, was already widely in use when I was a resident doctor serving in American hospitals almost 20 years ago. The modality has multiple beneficial effects, including increasing blood flow, stimulation of cell metabolism and healing, and rehabilitating unhealthy tissue. Orthopaedic surgeons use it to promote bone healing after their surgical procedures. Plastic surgeons use it to decrease swelling, accelerate wound healing, and minimize scarring after their operations.
The drawback with PEMF is the length of time that the device must be attached to the body in order to achieve therapeutic effect. Up to 6-8 hours everyday, for months. It works, but for many outpatient conditions it is not practical. This is where the Combined and Focused EMF Therapies provide an advantage: Long-term therapeutic outcome within 30-minutes treatment sessions.
The FEMF is currently the most advanced iteration of magnetotherapy technology. Unlike the older modalities, it is able to achieve field strength on par with MRI technology. Like MRI, it has virtually no contraindications as long as there are no metallic implants within the focused field of treatment. It is commonly used for painful arthritis, fracture healing, as well as muscle and tendon rehabilitation. Because the EM field freely passes through matter, the therapeutic effect can be fully felt through clothing or even through a leg cast. This not only makes treatment hassle-free, but it allows the modality to thoroughly treat hard-to-reach areas such as the inside of joints, stimulating healing in the entire area.
Magnetotherapy continues to find indications in healthcare and even veterinary care, empowering both doctors and patients. I look forward to its progress.
At East Coast Podiatry, our Magnetotherapy treatment utilizes an innovative therapy - the Super Inductive System (SIS). The technology is based on high-intensity electromagnetic field, which positively influences the human tissue. Therapeutic effects include pain relief, fracture healing, myorelaxation, myostimulation and joint mobilization.
Technology: BTL-6000 Super Inductive System Elite.
