Can metformin help me get pregnant if I have irregular cycles?

You wanted to know if metformin can help you get pregnant, because you've had irregular periods. And metformin is prescribed by doctors for 2 reasons. One is to regulate blood sugar, and the second is to help women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome. It helps to reduce some of the symptoms that women have that go along with PCOS. And one of these symptoms is irregular periods. So if you're wanting to have a baby, it's really hard to get pregnant when you're not having regular periods, because you may or may not be ovulating, and if you are, you have no idea when it's happening, so it's hard to time intercourse with ovulation. Metformin is given to help regulate your cycles, and then once you start having cycles that are 25 to 35 days in length, you can assume that you're probably ovulating about mid-cycle. That helps you to time things just right and increases the chances of conceiving.

Studies have been done on how effective metformin is at helping women to conceive, and they've shown that about 50% of women who take it end up having regular cycles, and so it may or may not be effective for you. But it's definitely worth a shot if your doctor has prescribed it, and I recommend taking it as prescribed unless your doctor says otherwise. If that doesn't work, then they can explore other options that will help you achieve your dreams of having a baby. Good luck with everything, and if you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
