COYOTE WALTZ | BANDALOOP vertical dance in Yosemite
My chest never ceases to be full of joy and tight with fear as I rappel over the top of a thousand-foot cliff to explore what we call a “dance floor” in the mountains. The maw of space contained only by the far away green of forest and grass is both an invitation to possibility and a reminder of our frailty. This tension between freedom and fragility is at the center of our film Coyote Waltz.
Yet behind this seriousness, the film’s four dances are underpinned by a playfulness, sometimes felt in the editing or camera work and other times in the dances themselves. We witness the dancers floating eerily, in full black-tie attire down the Merced river, finding grace and humor on top and over the edge of Yosemite’s Rostrum monolith, and formally waltzing incongruously on granite slabs above Yosemite valley. Possibility and frailty are together in the imagery as the viewer realizes the apparent tenuousness of the dancers’ locations while witnessing their effortlessness under duress.
Coyote Waltz leads us to reflect on our relationship to natural spaces and what our relationship to these spaces stirs in us.
