Let us never forget SGT Sylvester Antolak, Medal of Honor Recipient. #hero
Let us never forget SGT Sylvester Antolak, Medal of Honor Recipient.
Born in St. Clairsville, Ohio, the son of Polish immigrants, Sylvester Antolak gave everything for his country on Italian soil.
On May 24, 1944, near Cisterna di Littoria, he charged 200 yards over open, coverless terrain to destroy an enemy machine gun nest — shot three times and knocked to the ground, he rose each time and pressed forward.
With his shoulder gashed and right arm shattered, he wedged his submachine gun under his uninjured arm and kept going — closing to within 15 yards before opening fire, killing two and forcing ten more to surrender. He then refused medical attention and led his men toward a second strongpoint, where he was killed.
He rests today beneath the pines of Nettuno, at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery — his grave one of only two there marked with the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Shot three times. Arm shattered. Still standing. Still advancing.
Let us never forget.
