Making a 2D Minecraft / Terraria Game In ONLY 72 HOURS! | Gamedev Challenge ⏰💻

So I decided to try making a 2D Minecraft / Terraria game in 72 hours and this is how it went.

I was watching a bunch of other YouTube videos and I was struck with inspiration to create a clone of Terraria or Minecraft in 2D. Most others ended up attempting that challenge in 24 hours.
So I figured I'd change it up a bit and do it in 72 HOURS, I thought it would give me a ton of time to implement pretty much anything that I wanted like Biomes, Weapons, Ores, Armor, Enemies, etc... The sky's the limit!

I started the project by giving my artistic skills a try and immediately decided to just use some pre-made asset packs since I didn't have enough time to make the art myself, definitely not because I can't draw... Anyways after acquiring the goods I set out to create a tilemap system so that the world
could start being created, it is the foundation of any 2D game.

I made a mistake though because I should have started with Unity's built in 2D Tilemap system since it would have saved me a little bit of time and headache later in the project, but oh well. Sometimes you need to learn the hard way. So later I had to swap back to the Unity 2D Tilemap especially since it had 2D physics already implemented with it, and if I didn't want the play constantly falling through the earth I had to switch.

Afterwards I setup a player called Sbeve (not anyway associated with Steve from minecraft) moving around the world and started implementing basic systems like health, inventory, animations and smoother gameplay movement feel.
I then realized that I really needed to start work on procedural generation since I procrastinated on another important part of sandbox games like Terraria and Minecraft.
Setting up terrain generation was actually pretty easy since Unity implements a 2D Perlin Noise function in its math library so after that was done I moved on to having ores generate underground since I was on a roll!

Then I added the rest of the blocks from Kenneys Voxel Pack into the game so that you could build with whatever block you want since I figured I wouldn't have enough time to implement ways to naturally get the blocks. It ended up making the game a lot of fun since now it turned into a more creative kind of game.

Next I needed to save the world data out to disk since when you exit play mode your world is pretty much lost to the void and will never be able to see its friends or family ever again. Which was really sad :(
So I added saving and loading to the game and now if running on windows people can share their save files with others as well!

Then I had the brilliant idea to add the ability to place blocks as walls since having no back walls made the houses feel really open
Terraria was not an inspiration for this feature. In fact I think Terraria copied my idea!
The 72 Hours passed really fast and I didn't get to implement everything that I wanted to implement. In fact a lot of stuff was missing that I had planned. But I did make sure that the game was in a finished state and it actually felt like an actual game, even though it didn't have a ton of features.
All in all I probably spent roughly 50 ~ 60 hours on this project since there were a lot of late night coding sessions, but in the end I think it was worth it.

I hope you guys enjoy the game and the video! If you have any suggestions to improve the game or suggestions for other videos that I could do in the future. Please leave a comment down below!
