He may not be one of the most popular drug lords and he may likely be one of the least talked about cartel leaders. But Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo is one of the most influential drug lords that ever lived. Commonly known by his nickname “El Padrino” which means The Godfather, Gallardo is the pioneer of the modern drug trade and one of the biggest drug traffickers in Mexican history.
As a tribute to his power and standing in the world of the illegal drug trade, Gallardo was also often called “El Jefe de Jefes” (the boss of bosses). But of course, this notorious drug lord didn’t start off at such a powerful position. He didn’t have powerful parents or relatives who were cartel leaders to help kick start his career in the illegal drug trade. In fact, Miguel Angel Felix began from next to nothing.
He was born on January 8, 1946 on a ranch at the outskirts of Culiacan, Sinaloa. After he graduated from high school, he went on to college to study business. At the age of 17, Gallardo began an honest profession at the right side of the law – he was a law enforcement agent with the Mexican Federal Judicial Police. Then, Miguel worked as a family bodyguard for the governor of Sinaloa State, Leopold Sanchez Celis. It was his access to the governor’s political connections that gave Gallardo the boost he needed to start his career in drug trafficking and eventually, to form a cartel called the Guadalajara Cartel.
