Terra Firma | The Home of a Sailor Who Longs for Land and a Solid Foothold

The concept of "terra firma," or solid ground, profoundly influences the design of this home, reflecting the innate yearning of sailors for stability after life at sea. Designed by Luigi Rosselli, the house sits atop a sandstone outcrop overlooking Sydney Harbour, anchored by a robust rammed earth base with warm sandstone tones. Above this foundation, the home features recycled bricks from a demolished cottage, and privacy and shading are managed through geometric patterns of recycled terracotta roof tiles. These elements, combined with the use of environmentally friendly materials like Boral Concrete’s low-emission Envisia product and solar panels, embody a commitment to sustainability and a deep connection to the earth.

The house’s architecture contrasts solidity with fluidity, a hallmark of Rosselli’s design philosophy. Its ‘J’ shaped plan integrates a swimming pool and terrace into the structure, while the upper level includes a ‘captain’s bridge’ master suite, complete with nautical-inspired details like a funnel and flagpole mast. This design not only honors the mariners’ desire for stability but also playfully acknowledges their perpetual draw to the sea, encapsulating the contradiction inherent in the human condition of seeking both grounding and adventure.
