Project Manager interview questions and answers are tricky in many senses. From one side, you need to show an understanding of Project Management. From another – you must demonstrate practical skills relevant to the role.

In fact, you have none of that in the beginning.

I interviewed junior project managers more than any other PMs.

Today, I want to share what an interviewing project manager wants to hear.

Here's the main thing you need to understand:

"Project Manager interviews are broken!"

Interviewers suffer from the curse of knowledge.

They think that candidates should know what they know. They think that candidates without PMP certification should have already read the PMBOK Guide.

But here's the catch:

They don't need certified project managers for an average project they do.

What do they need?

A capable project manager who can get things done in their environment.

But they don't know how to ask interview questions correctly to test your practical skills in project management.

Therefore, you need to get prepared.

For example, the "Tell me about yourself" on the project manager's interview.

All candidates get it wrong!

An interviewing PM doesn't want to know your whole biography starting from pre-school.

On the interview, you should tell stories that describe you as a perfect project manager only.

What does it mean?

It means only stories about:

1. Leadership
2. Management
3. Communication
4. Administration

All your answers on an interview should highlight your abilities to manage and lead people. You need to show that you are able to get things done.

Also, you need to show that you are not a textbook worm.

You're able to manage projects in a real environment with real people. Moreover, you're proficient working with complete strangers. You can organize new teams.

And in general, you need to show that you're capable of working in a new environment.

Project Manager interview preparation is a separate topic.

Ideally, here's what you need to do:

You need to prepare stories that you'll tell on an interview beforehand. During "tell me about yourself" part you'll tell them on a high level.

Why?

To pick curiosity of an interviewer. For sure, he or she will want to know details.

That's where you go deeper and position yourself as a great project manager.

Again, how can you do it on an interview?

Only by telling stories that are relevant for a Project Manager.

And...

...that show your practical experience.

For sure, to focus on the most important things you need to understand the basics of project management.
