Electrostatic vs Bass Reflex #quantumofsound #hify #hifi #audiotechnique

Quantum Of Sound | Speaker Knowledge Series | Electrostatic vs Bass Reflex

Electrostatic and bass reflex speakers do not only sound different.

They are built on different principles.

An electrostatic speaker uses an ultra-light diaphragm suspended between charged stators.
The diaphragm moves because of an electric field.

A bass reflex speaker uses a dynamic driver in a cabinet with a tuned port.
The port helps reinforce low frequencies around the tuning point.

This means the difference is not only tonal.

It begins with the way sound is created.

Electrostatic speakers are often associated with speed, transparency and low-mass diaphragm behavior.

Bass reflex speakers are often associated with stronger bass output, higher practicality and a more conventional cabinet-based approach.

Neither design is automatically better.

Electrostatic follows a panel-based, low-mass principle.
Bass reflex follows a driver-and-cabinet tuning principle.

The real question is not which one looks more exotic.

The real question is what kind of presentation, room behavior and listening experience the design creates.

Quantum Of Sound explores how audio systems really work.
