Lucienne's Quest (3DO) Playthrough

A playthrough of Panasonic's 1996 role-playing game for the 3DO, Lucienne's Quest.

Lucienne's Quest, known in Japan as "Sword & Sorcery" (ソードアンドソーサリー), was created by Microcabin, a small developer that rose to prominence in the Japanese PC space following the release of the Xak: The Art of Visual Stage for the PC88 in 1989.

It was the 3DO's sole traditional JRPG, and one of the last official releases for the system in both Japan and North America. The game was later ported to the Sega Saturn, but that version never saw an international release.

Lucienne is a fifteen-year-old magician's apprentice. Her master, the great Kokindo, is away on a journey and has asked her to look after the Pinakoteik Tower. In his absence, Ago, a werewolf, shows up, asking for help. Excited by the prospect of adventure, Lucienne decides to accompany Ago, and the two set off in search of a cure for his curse. They hop between towns, helping strangers and making friends, and before long, they find themselves wrapped up in a globe-trotting quest to save the world from evil.

It's not an original premise, but it sets the stage for a charming, cozy RPG romp that never takes itself too seriously. The plot is a string of silly contrivances, the characters regularly ramble on about god knows what, the endearingly terrible localization rarely fails to entertain, and though it's clearly ancient - the polygon counts are low and the framerate chugs hard - it looks pretty nice. The art holds up.

The gameplay is simple, solid JRPG stuff. The dungeons and towns are visually distinct and interesting, your objectives are clear, the battles involve some strategy and move along at a good clip, and the streamlined pacing is good at keeping things feeling fresh and novel. The playtime might seem short, but it has all the content you'd expect from a typical mid-90s JRPG. The difference lies in its distinct lack of bloat: you never need to grind for experience and gold.

I really enjoyed Lucienne's Quest's straightforward approach. It's easy, breezy, entertaining, and respectful of the player's time. If you love retro RPGs but don't have 40-60 hours to commit to one, give this weird gem a look.
