Sun Valley's Flawed Advanced and Expert Terrain

When it comes to advanced skiing, @SunValley offers some fairly steep terrain, with most black diamond runs consisting of ungroomed trails, glades, and bowls. While few resorts truly specialize in advanced terrain, you’ll still find a handful of single blacks accessible from nearly every lift.

These runs aren’t especially long, and most mellow into blue terrain partway down. But after a few days without fresh snow, they often develop massive moguls—especially on steeper sections. Despite the Sunrise Bowl expansion a few years back, Sun Valley still isn’t the top pick for expert-level skiers and riders.

Most advanced visitors will find the majority of terrain manageable, with only a small pocket of genuinely expert-level pitches at the resort’s southern end. Sunrise Bowl does offer steep bowls and tight tree skiing, but its opening is highly variable. And even when open, its south-facing aspect makes for some of the least reliable snow conditions of any major resort in the Rockies.

If you're heading into Sunrise Bowl expecting high-quality powder and it hasn’t snowed recently, temper your expectations—you might be met with crusty or sun-affected snow instead.
