Spain has launched a major repatriation operation in the Canary Islands after a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. Passengers have begun disembarking and boarding special flights home, with the first evacuation flight carrying Spanish citizens to Madrid. Separate evacuation flights are also being arranged for passengers from other countries. The outbreak killed three passengers, while the World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed six hantavirus cases. The WHO says all remaining passengers are asymptomatic and have been tested, adding that the overall global public health risk remains low. The ship had departed Argentina in April for a cruise to Cape Verde before the outbreak was detected.
