AR 2936 ClassM solar flare Jan 29,2022 in HAlpha
Class M and Class C solar flares caught on video this weekend! This is almost two hours of footage compressed into 14 seconds. As you watch you will see small white arcs/lines that are the Class-C flares (some in-between the sunspots some around on the outside) at the end of the video you will see a much larger arc/crack and from the lower-left, the explosion will push up a plasma stream.
Those sunspots in Active Region 2936 are LARGER than Earth and so are the explosions. Because we are viewing the Chromosphere from above we are seeing the flairs push UP toward us from the Photosphere below.
Scientists classify solar flares according to their X-ray brightness, in the wavelength range 1 to 8 Angstroms. Flares classes have names: A, B, C, M, and X, with A being the tiniest and X being the largest. Each category has nine subdivisions ranging from, e.g., C1 to C9, M1 to M9, and X1 to X9. These are logarithmic scales, much like the seismic Richter scale. So an M flare is 10 times as strong as a C flare.
The amount of energy that's released in a typical flare is about the same as 100 megaton bombs exploding all at once. That's about 10 million times more than the energy released by a volcanic explosion. But compared to the amount of total energy the Sun emits every second it's pretty small- only about 1/10.
