One Day in Granada, Nicaragua | Isletas, Monkeys & Margaritas

What can you really do in one day in Granada, Nicaragua?

Terri and her friend Christy set out for a simple day trip to Granada. Terri’s first “field trip” from Hacienda Iguana. What she got was a full, layered travel day that felt like ten different experiences in one.

They hopped into a private taxi for the 90 minute drive into one of Nicaragua’s most colorful and historic cities. The day began at Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, where a service was already underway, followed by a walk toward the main square with a few unexpected stops along the way. A cigar shop, two very sweet dogs, and a peek inside the courtyard of Hotel Consulado de Granada offered a first glimpse into life in Granada.

The city revealed itself slowly through patterned sidewalks, bright facades, and quiet courtyards. Lunch at Hotel Dario turned into an unexpectedly delightful and serene pause, complete with a peaceful pool and a lingering question about travel style.

Boutique hotels and great food, or rougher adventures with Zeke. The debate continues.
From there, Terri and Christy wandered La Calzada, stepped into the striking but surprisingly simple Catedral Immaculada Concepción de María, and explored Museo Convento San Francisco, where local art, a historic cloister, and views of Mombacho Volcano added another layer to the day.

Then everything shifted.

Out on Lake Nicaragua, they met their guide Lorenzo for a private boat tour through Las Isletas de Granada. What followed was quiet, beautiful, and unexpectedly fascinating. Birds nesting in trees, lily pads floating across the water with tiny birds walking across them, a mix of simple homes and grand estates, and even Fortaleza San Pablo, once used to protect the city from pirates.

And then, Monkey Island.

With tomatoes in hand and a quick lesson learned, break them in half or risk losing them to the water, they fed the monkeys and leaned fully into the moment (without falling out of the boat!).
The day ended the way all good travel days should. Rooftop margaritas at Encuentros Club, sunset over the city, and brick oven pizza at Pan de Vida before the long, quiet taxi ride back.

It was one of those days that felt like everything at once. Architecture, history, water, wildlife, great food, good friends, and just enough chaos to make it memorable.

This is how Zeke and Terri move through the world. Sometimes together, sometimes solo, but always fully experiencing the place they are in.
