ATAL TUNNEL-connecting Manali to Lahaul Spiti Valley : Himachal 7N/8D Trip I EP -16 I

This is 10 th episode of @mmjoshi84 7N/8D Road Trip to Himachal Pradesh Today is the 5 th day of our road trip and we are enjoying it to the hilt. We will cruise through Solang valley again and then cross Atal tunnel on way to Sissu for night halt.

Atal Tunnel is a 9.02 Km long single tube tunnel connecting Manali to Keylong in the Lahaul Spiti District. It bypasses Rohtang Pass in Pir Panjal range of HImalaya. The tunnel reduces the travel time by about 4 hours and the overall distance by 45 Km between Manali and Keylong. The previous route through Rohtang pass, Gramphu, and Khoksar remained closed due to heavy snow in winters and the local population faced a lot of misery during that time. They had to store food and fuel, medicine, and all such needs as they used to be cut off from the mainland. Moreover, the route was prone to avalanches, road blockades, and traffic congestion.
