미국 명문대가 동양인을 차별하는 진짜 이유

오랜 시간동안 많은 학생들에게 미국에서 겪는 동양인 차별에 대한 고민 메시지를 받았습니다.
그래서 저도 관련 이슈에 관심을 가지게 되었고 ‘미국 대학교의 동양인 차별’에 대해 영상을 만들게 되었습니다.
동양인에 대한 미국 사람들의 인식적인 차별도 심각한 사안이지만,
이 영상에서 ‘대학교 입학 심사에서 일어나는 차별’에 대한 부분에 보다 집중한 이유는
이런 사회 시스템적인 차별이 인식적 차별을 낳는데도 계속해서 큰 효과를 주기 때문입니다.

처음에는 최대한 객관적이고 균형적인 시각으로 영상을 풀어내려고 했으나,
‘소수 집단 우대정책’이 아직도 필요하다는 쪽의 주장은 저를 끝내 설득시키지 못했습니다. 백인 기득권에 의해 만들어진 잘못된 역사로 만들어진 정책으로 결국 가장 큰 피해를 보는 쪽은 동양인임이 명백한걸 느꼈기 때문입니다. 그리고 겉으로 보이는 피부색보다 내면의 능력을 더 중요하다고 본다면, 하버드 전교생이 모두 동양인이 되더라도 큰 문제가 되지 않는다고 생각하기 때문입니다.

좋은 의도로 시작한 정책이라도 지금 상황에서 무고한 피해자를 낳고 있다면, 새로운 정책을 개발하는 데 고민을 해봐야 한다고 생각해요.
최근에 인종별 격차보다 소득별 격차가 두 배나 크다는 점을 주목해서,
인종과 상관없이 저소득층 가정들에게 도움을 주는 프로그램을 시작한 학교들이 있습니다.
아리조나 대학교, 플로리다 대학교, 네브라스카 대학교가 시행한 저소득층을 위한 지원 정책이나
텍사스, 캘리포니아 대학교가 교육 재원이 낮은 고등학교에도 입학 문을 여는 ‘percentage plans’이 그의 예입니다.
이 정책을 시행하자 다양한 소득 계층의 학생들 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 인종의 학생들이 입학했다고 합니다.
