Winona Wagon Co. Iron-Clad Hubs | Engels Coach Shop
In 1879 Winona Wagon Co was established in Winona, Minnesota. Well known for their iron-clad hubs, specifically designed for shielding the hubs from inclement weather, Winona wagons became well known in the American west. Less than a year later, founder A.J.Stevens died, leaving the Winona Wagon Co. in its infancy, but still flourished until May of 1925. With the transition into motorized vehicles, Winona Wagon Co. was not able to change with the times and ended up liquidated in bankruptcy.
Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles finds many of these carriage and wagon company vehicles coming in for partial or complete restoration. Although the remains of this particular wagon are unknown as to their whereabouts, these wheels remain on display in a gate near Red Lodge, MT.
As is common with many wheels, they were painted with a latex house paint, which ended up being their demise. Latex is a rubber style paint which does not breath, leaving the wheels unable to exchange moisture through the seasons. This traps moisture within the wheels and causes them to rot from the inside out. Such was the problem with these wheels and why they needed to be rebuilt. They will continue to be a testimony to the Winona Wagon Co. of almost 100 years ago.
