In this video, I answer a question from a viewer and I talk about how one should go about collecting YouTube royalties. If you use a producer’s beat without his or her permission, that producer may put a Content ID claim on your YouTube video, that you uploaded to your YouTube channel. Split sheets must be written up, specifying who owns what percentage of a song. On each song that you collaborate with other people on, a split sheet will need to be made. Once the song splits are agreed upon, you may go register your share, of that song, in your PRO Account (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC). At that point, your PRO will be responsible for collecting your share of any Performance Royalties generated for any YouTube, Apple Music or Spotify streams. If you do not sign split sheets, then don’t expect to get YouTube royalties. There are lots of songwriters and producers out there who are not collecting all of their music performance royalties. Don’t get mad at the other parties, if you didn’t take the time and due diligence to register your song. In this video, I explain exactly what you will need to do, to make sure that you get all (or most) of your royalties from YouTube streams.
