Hello! My name is Caroline, and I have been an ESL teacher for three years, as well as a teaching coach for PalFish since summer 2019. It's nice to meet you! :) This week was a big one-- I hit 400 subscribers! :) I am so grateful for the support this community has given me, and I just want to be helpful. Thanks for tuning in!

What can one do to engage students, build rapport, and progress learning? ASK QUESTIONS! :D I begin every single class with about five questions. These simple conversation starters help put the student at ease, empowering them to speak up throughout the lesson!

THE 5 QUESTIONS I ASK VERY YOUNG STUDENTS:
00:51 Hello! My name is ____. What is your name?
3:09 I'm HAPPY to see you! How are you?
4:15 Wow! I see a ____!
5:07 Do you like soccer? Do you like dogs?
6:30 Are you ready? Let's go!
6:53 (What if my student is really shy and doesn't respond at all?)

THE 5 QUESTIONS I ASK SCHOOL-AGE STUDENTS:
8:35 Hi! I'm ____. What's your name?
9:27 How old are you?
9:47 Where are you from? (I forgot to add this one... whoops!)
10:26 What did you do today? + a follow-up question
12:18 I wonder what our lesson is about today... Can you read?

THE 5 QUESTIONS I ASK OLDER/ADULT STUDENTS:
13:40 What would you like to talk about? (ask before the lesson!)
15:30 How long have you been with PalFish?
16:23 Why are you studying English?
17:22 If I hear a mistake, would you prefer that I correct you right away, make a note for later, or shall we just continue talking?

Every teaching style is different. Much of what I learned has come from watching other teachers (seriously... I watched over 1000 YouTube videos before I started teaching online in 2018). Some of the advice here was inspired by the two years I spent teaching English in France.

What I've seen is that the very BEST thing a teacher can do for ESL students is to make a safe, welcoming, and empowering classroom. If students know they can speak up without fear of embarrassment or unrealistic expectation, they will speak. And speak, and speak, and speak. Encourage your students to converse by showing interest in them-- start every lesson with some questions, and listen with respect to their answers.

For each question, I model exactly how I ask it and I explain my reasoning behind it. I hope this helps! I would love to hear your teaching tips, too! What a wonderful YouTube community this is, that we can all learn from each other!

Thanks for watching! :D If you've found my video helpful, please subscribe!
