Lipid chemistry: Part 6: Cholesterol: Structure and function. Cholesterol is widely distributed in our body. It is the major component of the cell membrane and of lipoproteins. Cholesterol consists of four fused hydrocarbon ring A to D called the steroid nucleus, also known as cyclopentanone per hydro phenanthrene ring. To this steroid nucleus, an eight hydrocarbon chain attached to carbon 17 of the D ring. Ring A has a hydroxyl group at carbon 3, and ring B has a double bond between
carbon 5 and carbon 6. There are a total of 27 carbon atoms in cholesterol. Cholesterol is the
major sterol in animal tissues. Cholesterol has many important functions, for example, it is a component of cell membranes, and is a precursor of the bile salts and the steroid hormones like aldosterone, cortisol, testosterone, progesterone, and estrogens. Cholesterol is also a precursor for vitamin D. Whenever there is hypercholesterolemia, this excessive amount of cholesterol in the blood, deposited in arterial walls causing atherosclerosis.
