On the exoplanet HD 189733b, winds scream at 5,400 miles per hour. Silicate particles condense in its deep atmosphere, forming tiny glass droplets that may streak sideways through the sky. This 63-light-year-away world is one of the best-studied hot Jupiters. Astronomers used the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes to detect its light spectrum, revealing the likely presence of these microscopic glass particles in the upper atmosphere. While direct observation of the rain remains beyond current telescopes, the spectroscopic evidence is strong.
