When the Wine Never Fails
If you can accept that John’s account of Jesus turning water into wine is a literary account but not actual history, then what role does the narrative play in the gospel? Many scholars see in it a kind of communion story (John’s gospel does not have an account of the Last Supper). It takes wine out of the place of being luxury item enjoyed by the wealthy and makes it so abundant that everyone can have all that they want. Is John rooting communion in the tradition of the great Kingdom feast in which the rich and the poor are made to be equals in every way?
