Have you ever seen a wild white lion before? Well, I was recently lucky enough to come across Casper, one of only three wild, free-roaming white lions in Africa, during a visit to the Kruger National Park.

Casper is one of four male lions that make up the Shishangaan Coalition and they live in the south-central part of the Kruger National Park. They are often seen near Satara Rest Camp, and that's exactly where we found them - about 4km south of camp.

We spent over an hour with them and had plenty of fantastic opportunities to photograph them as they relaxed and bonded right next to our vehicle.

Casper and the other two wild white lions of the Greater Kruger National Park are not albinos. Instead, they are leucistic. Leucism is basically a recessive gene that makes their fur white, but their skin and eyes remain their normal colour. It's extremely rare to see white lions in the wild and even rarer to see one as old as Casper, who is already over six years old. This really was one of the most amazing lion sightings I've ever had!
