The Death Valley Sailing Stones Move by Themselves? #SailingStones #RacetrackPlaya #DeathValley

The Racetrack Playa’s famous “sailing stones” leave long carved trails across a cracked dry lakebed — but they don’t move by magic. Researchers captured the rocks sliding when thin ice sheets formed on ephemeral ponds and were pushed by light winds, nudging stones across slick mud.

The largest documented event moved dozens of rocks in synchronized paths and was recorded with GPS and time-lapse cameras.
