Yoshitoshi – Imamurasaki
This elegant and beautifully composed print is by the artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and it depicts the courtesan Imamurasaki of the Kimpei Daikiku House. It comes from the series Kinsei Jimbutsushi, or Personalities of Recent Times.
Here, Imamurasaki is shown in elaborate, long-sleeved robes, wearing a small hat, and performing a dance to imayo music—a popular style that originated among common people. I love all the colors and patterns in her elaborate kimono. And her active pose with her arm sweeping above her head, the tassels swinging with the motion.
This print series is quite interesting, as it includes a wide range of figures from both contemporary and historical Japan. They were issued as furoku, or supplements, to subscribers of the Yamato Newspaper. So rather than being sold individually at first, they were tucked inside the newspaper. This is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful examples from the series. Wouldn’t you like to have this colorful print fall out of your newspaper in the morning.
