There is no set rule for trimming and dusting natural hair, and once I learned how to do right by MY hair, I can tell you...I'm never going to a salon AGAIN!

Hair Growth Starts At The ROOT

I know most of us have been told to clip/ trim our ends to promote hair growth, yet that is very misleading.

Maintaining healthy ends will help us to retain length, BUT trimming or dusting our ends has nothing to with “promoting growth.” I encourage you to research how the hair growth cycle works and learn more about the anatomy of hair follicles.

Hair starts growing at the bottom of a hair follicle a.k.a. the root of the hair, and grows within 3 different phases.

Those three different phases of the hair growth cycle are:

Anagen (growth) phase. The hair begins to grow from the root. This phase usually lasts between three and seven years.

Catagen (transitional) phase. The growth slows down and the follicle shrinks in this phase. This lasts between two and four months.

Telogen (resting) phase. The old hair falls out and new hair begins to grow from the same hair follicle. This lasts between three and four months.

Different follicles go through different phases of the cycle at the same time. Some follicles are in the growth phase while others might be in the resting phase. Some of your hairs might be growing, while others are falling out a.k.a. shedding.

When damaged, the follicles can stop producing hair, and your hair growth cycle can slow down. If you have any concerns about your hair growth, talk to a dermatologist first before investing in products with “miracle growth claims.”

Sadly, there's no magic potion that will make your hair grow faster. Yet; good news is there is much we can control by the way we treat our hair.

To promote optimal hair growth, you have to "feed" the hair from the inside and the outside. Proper diet, which includes adequate protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and B vitamins, is essential.

"Feeding from the outside" means using shampoos and conditioners that target the scalp, as well as hydrate the hair.
