The Federal Reserve meets this week for a 2-day policy meeting starting September 15th and ending September 16th. The Fed is in a tough spot because congress is utterly failing our country on providing the stimulus we need. The Federal Reserve hates stalemates and political debates - which is why they rarely comment on them. However, according to the WSJ this morning, when the Fed DOES decide to mix into politics, we know that situations are dire.Chicago Fed President Charles Evan’s told reporters: “Trouble is brewing with the expiration of relief programs” Quote:, the partisan politics “a lack of action on stimulus or an inadequate one presents a very significant downside risk to the economy today.” San Francisco Bank President Mary Daly said more stimulus now is appropriate. Neel Kashkari, Minneapolis Fed President: says if we keep along this path of no or too little stimulus, we will jus have a very muted economic recovery. So here’s the scoop. so far, over 2 million people have permanently lost their jobs. With 30 million unemployment and expectations that 40% of them may never get their jobs back, we face potentially another 10-12 million people losing their jobs - which out of 155 million workers in America, 7.7% of people working in America may have permanently lost their job. That’s different from 8.4% unemployment - we’re talking about permanent job losses. And the fed is now referencing a Columbia university study which reports that stimulus - specifically from the government is what we need now to avoid a slower and worse recovery. On Wednesday we expect the fed to hold a press conference and give us insights into their latest actions. It’s doubtful we’ll hear something new, BUT - if the fed announces some new action or some change, it could be market moving. So be prepared for that as well. For example, and I don’t think they will but let’s say the fed says they’re going to ramp up their buying of mortgages - we could potentially see Real Estate rates fall even lower. But the big theme is: there's pretty much nothing the Fed can do now to help the drowning sectors in the economy - congress must act on stimulus.
