RSV Cases on the Rise & Mass General Brigham’s Response

Throughout Massachusetts and across the nation, hospitals are treating a significant influx of pediatric patients with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and are facing constraints on hospital bed availability. Mass General Brigham (MGB) pediatric arms in the community and at Mass General for Children (MGfC) are caring for small children and infants with severe respiratory illness, many requiring treatment in hospital acuity settings higher than normal.

To help streamline public awareness of RSV and the efforts underway to manage this ongoing issue, MGfC, along with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and MGB held an informational briefing on Nov. 10th addressing the following topics

1. RSV 101: what it is, how it is spread and populations experiencing the greatest impact of viral spread;
2. Spread: Contributing factors to why RSV is spreading so rapidly and what doctors within MGfC – and across the MGB system – are seeing, as well as what families can do to stay safe;
3. Solutions: Overview of how MGfC as a hospital – and MGB as a system – are taking steps to support patients and staff during the latest surge.
