In When The Clouds Roll By, actress Ching Li, in her first lead role, delivers a most memorable performance playing Hsiung Su-su, a heartbroken damsel in distress that sinks into schizophrenia after her lover died in a plane crash. The film's title literally translates as "muddy cloud" which better reflects the film's mood and her powerful, yet sensitive portrayal, which came at a time when many dramas portrayed females like a pitiful lost puppy rather than a brooding character shaken by internal struggles. Ching Li quickly became one of Shaw Brothers' leading ladies, as she effortlessly moved between films transforming herself from a vicious kung-fu lady in one movie to a wide-eyed dreamer or a singer in another. She starred in over 50 Shaw Brothers' films.
