I Am Merche Blasco | OPEN CALL 2021 | THE SHED
Merche Blasco is a New York-based artist and composer who builds imprecise technological assemblages that catalyze embodied forms of live electroacoustic composition and new modes of listening.
Blasco’s “Open Call” commissions, “Vibrant Strata” is an experimental music performance exploring the nature of our world as a constant flux of vibrant energy. Merche Blasco amplifies the vibrations of animate and inanimate life to reveal the swirl of forces that bind us inextricably to each other and to our environment.
Act 1 opens our senses to the electromagnetic waves coursing through The Shed itself. Act 2 presents musical collaborators Shelley Hirsch and Dafna Naphtali, and a 3-D printer named Anette, in a call for an ecology of nonhierarchical relationships amongst humans and other organic and inorganic materialities. Act 3, a collaboration with interdisciplinary artist Miriam Parker, with a wearable piece by fashion designers threeASFOUR, expands our notion of the human body. Our ability to perceive ourselves as points on a universal vibrant continuum opens us to an understanding of the extent of our influence on the world and on each other.

Launched as part of The Shed’s inaugural year program, “Open Call” is a large-scale commissioning program for early-career NYC-based artists. For this second iteration, artists and interdisciplinary arts leaders, including Shed staff, selected 27 artists out of 1,500 proposals to present work in 2021 and 2022. Selected artists each received a commissioning fee of up to $15,000 depending on the scope of their projects, robust production support, and resources to further nurture their practices and expand their audiences.
For the first iteration of “Open Call,” 52 artists and collectives selected in 2018 were commissioned to present boundary-pushing new work beginning in May 2019. The presentation of work by some artists was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They will present their work in 2021 and 2022 along with the artists selected in 2020.
