Making your own Hospital bed exercise system

Laying still in a hospital bed is terrible for health and recovery. For just a few dollars, with parts from any hardware store, you can give the patient a wide range of exercise options that will greatly improve their health and state of mind. This video reviews the parts and capability of the system I built. The patient shown here cannot sit up or leave this bed for 12 weeks. This system has kept her healthy and ready for when she can finally move to the next steps of her recovery.

Parts:
*tubes to attach to the bed frame - 1 1/4 inch NPT sch 40 pipe. 6 " at the head of the bed, 18" tall at the foot of the bed

*All remaining tubing: 1/2" NPT galvanized sch 40 pipe.

*top tube: 3" ABS drain pipe

* Bike system: drill a 1.5 inch diameter hole (or that needed to match your bottom bracket threads) for the axel. Use a 4x4 as the starting block, trim down a bit on the sides so that the "spider" that would normally hold the chain rings rubs on the block to give slight resistance to movement (helpful for the patient). Take normal pedals and wrap them with foam packing material and hold this on with rubber bands. The top block is any scrap of wood with a hole in it (make the hole any way you can - I used a large drill then made it to size on my lathe, but there are lots of other ways to do this).
