Introduction to Gerunds and Infinitives: Improve your English with Gerunds & Infinitives! 動名詞と不定詞の紹介

A great textbook to help with Gerunds and Infinitives: https://amzn.to/3jmc5g2 Are you ready to improve your English skills and sound more like a native speaker by learning about Gerunds and Infinitives? In today’s English lesson you will enjoy a brief introduction to gerunds and infinitives.

First, you will learn the differences between gerunds and infinitives and how to correctly make each one. A gerund is: ‘verb + ing’, and an infinitive is: ‘to + a base verb’. The sentences: “I like eating,” and “I like to eat” both have the same meaning. “I like eating,” uses the gerund (eating), while “I like to eat” uses the infinitive (to eat). This lesson explores several example sentences using gerunds and infinitives, and challenges you to create this grammar point yourself. In addition to positive sentence structure, this lesson also gives a few examples of negative sentences using both gerunds and infinitives.

After looking at several sentences where the gerund and infinitives after the main verb have the same meaning, this lesson also introduces you to the idea that there are a few main verbs that will create different meanings based on whether you use a gerund or an infinitive. For example, the verb, ‘stop’. “I stopped drinking coffee” and “I stopped to drink coffee” both have different meanings. So after the main verb, stop, if you use the gerund or the infinitive, you have two different meanings. I stopped drinking coffee means that you have given up coffee and that you don’t drink it at all anymore. I stopped to drink coffee means that you were busy doing something and you took a short break from what you were doing so that you could drink coffee. There are only a few verbs in English where the meaning will change like this, so don’t get too worried.

Finally, this lesson introduces you to the idea that after some verbs you can only use a gerund and after some verbs you can only use a gerund. Verbs like ‘want’ and ‘need’ only use infinitives afterwards (I want to travel, I need to sleep). Verbs like ‘enjoy’ and ‘avoid’ only use gerunds afterwards (I enjoy swimming, I avoid talking to strangers).

Trying to remember which verbs can only be followed by gerunds and which verbs can only be followed with an infinitive may seem challenging, so check out the textbook I recommend for help with gerunds and infinitives: https://amzn.to/2Df5z8O
